Nuacht ó Rang 5 & 6

Oileán Faoide/ Whiddy Island

Bhí tús an-ghnóthach don bhliain ag Rang a 5 agus a 6. Thosnaíomar amach ag déanamh staidéar ar ár oileán áitiúil Oileán Faoide.  Tháinig mamó le Conor Ó hÁinle isteach chun labhairt linn mar d’fhás sí suas ar an oiléan thart ar ochtó bliain ó shin. Bhí scéalta iontacha suimiúla ag Bn. Uí hÁinle dúinn.  Ní raibh dochtúir nó sagart nó múinteoir nó garda ina gcónaí ar an oileán agus dúirt sí go raibh an saol dian ann. Tháinig sí amach cúpla uair gach seachtain chun siopadóireacht a dhéanamh sa bhaile mór agus chun dul ar aifreann.

D’fhoghlaimíomar faoin tubaiste ola a tharla ann i 1979 nuair a phléasc an tancaer ola La Betelgeuse sa bhá in aice leis an oileán.  Maraíodh seachtar fear áitiúil agus bhí truailliú uafásach sa bhá.  Thug seanthuismitheoirí le Jayce Ó Cróinín isteach leabhar agus físeáin a bhain leis an tubaiste ola agus d’fhéachamar orthu.

Bhí lá iontach againn nuair a chuamar ar The Maid of the Isles amach ar cuairt go dtí an tearmann ola atá á rith anois ag Zenith Energy.  Thaispeáin Mario Minehane sinn timpeall agus bhí sé thar a bheith suimiúil.  Tá an-bhéim go deo acu anois ar chúrsaí sábháilteachta.

Dheineamar tionscnaimh i ngrúpaí bunaithe ar na rudaí a d’fhoghlaimíomar faoinár stair áitiúil.

Rang 5 & 6 had a very busy start to the school year. We started out studying about our local island, Whiddy. Conor Ó hÁinle’s nan, who grew up on the island, came in to talk to us about what life was like on the island almost eighty years ago. She had wonderful, interesting stories to tell us. We learned that there was no doctor, priest, teacher or guard living on the island and that life was very hard there. She came in to the mainland once or twice a week to do her shopping and to go go to mass.

We learned about the tragedy that happened on the island when the oil tanker Le Betelguese, which was next to the island, exploded. Seven local men were killed and the bay was badly polluted as a result. Jayce’s grandparents sent in a book and a video about the tragedy which we used as part of our study.

We had a great day setting of The Maid of the Isles on a visit to the oil terminal run by Zenith energy. Mario Minehane took us on a most interesting tour of the terminal and he explained the massive emphasis on safety at the terminal now.

Cúrsaí Spóirt

Ghlac Ranganna a 5 is a 6 páirt i mBlitz rugbaí thuas ag Scoil na mBuachaillí chun an Corn Domhanda den rugbaí a cheiliúradh.  Tá traenáil rugbaí ar siúl acu gach Máirt le Eugene.  Tá an-chuid de na buachaillí agus cailíní ag freastal ar sheisiún traenála don pheil i ndiaidh scoile gach Céadaoin le Múinteoir Tara agus Múinteoir Rhona.  Bhí lá iontach amach ag Ranganna 4, 5 agus 6 ag Scoil na mBuachaillí nuair a ghlacadar páirt i gcomórtas Mini-7’s le scoileanna eile áitiúla ar an 16ú Deireadh Fómhair.  Bhí aimsir aoibheann acu agus bhaineadar go léir an-thaitneamh go deo as an lá.

Rang 5 & 6 recently took part in a rugby blitz at Scoil na mBuachaillí to celebrate the world cup. Every Tuesday they  train with  Eugene. Many of the boys and girls take part in football training with Múinteoir Tara and Rhona after school on Wednesdays. Rang 4, 5 & 6 had a great day on 16th October when they took part in the mini 7’s competition with other local schools. They weather was great and they all had a fantastic day!

Aoíchainteoirí Eile/ Other Guest Speakers

Tháinig an fear dóiteáin áitiúil Ian Vickery isteach chun labhairt faoi shábháilteacht tine sa bhaile.  Bhuail Garda Bridget isteach chun Cyberbulaíocht a phlé leis na leanaí chomh maith.  D’fhoghlaim siad an-chuid rudaí tábhachtacha faoi chonas iad féin a choimeád sábháilte ar an idirlíon agus ar na fóin so-ghluaiste.

Ian Vickery, one of our local firemen, came in to talk to the children about fire safety in the home. Garda Bridget called in to discuss cyber-bullying with the children and to give them some useful strategies to protect themselves online and on mobile phones.

Obair Rang 2

Coiste Glas

Labhair na daltaí agus Múinteoir Áine dúinn faoin obair a bheidh ar siúl tar éis an briseadh lár téarma bainte lenár gcúigiú brat glas.  Beidh suirbhé ar siúl sna ranganna ag cinntiú go bhfuilimid ag athchúrsáil i gceart, ag sábhail uisce agus leictreachas.

Student members of the Green schools committee and Múinteoir Áine spoke to us about the work on our 5th Green Flag coming up after mid term break. Surveys will be carried out weekly to ensure that we are still recycling properly and being efficient in saving water and electricity.

An Fómhar

Tá An Fómhair geall leis thart anois agus táimid ag baint na prátaí a chuireamar san Earrach. Tháinig Jessica Mason isteach chun cabhrú le Rang a 1 iad a bhaint agus a ullmhú do bhéile álainn Dé hAoine seo caite. D’itheamar ár ndóthain prátaí le im! Míle buíochas do Jessica as teacht isteach. Fad is a bhí Rang 1 ag ithe bhí boladh álainn ag teacht ó Rang 3 & 4. Bhí Catherine ag cócaráil Chutney a bhí déanta as na piorraí a d’fhás sa gháirdín. Gabhaimid buíochas leat chomh maith Catherine.

Autumn is drawing to an end and we are harvesting the potatoes that we planted in the Spring. Jessica Mason kindly came in to help Rang 1 to dig and prepare the potatoes for a wonderful meal last Friday. We boiled the potatoes and ate them with butter until we were full! As we were eating, we could smell something else tasty cooking across the hallway in Rang 3 & 4. Catherine has called in to make gorgeous pear chutney using the pears from the trees in the garden. Thank you both for coming in and giving this experience to the children!

Rhóna agus an 8ú bonn Uile Éireann

Táimid an bhródúil as Rhóna agus foireann Chorcaí a bhuaigh an Craobh Uile Éireann arís i mbliana i bPáirc an Chrocaigh! Is é an 8ú bonn do Rhóna agus an 10ú mbonn do fhoireann na mban.  Bhí lá dearg agus bán againn roimh an cluiche chun tacaíocht a thaispeáint! Is inspioráid iontach í do dhaltaí Gaelscoil Bheanntraí. Maith thú Rhóna!

Brat Glas Uimhir 5! Bitheagsúlacht

Tá an obair faoi láimhe againn ar ár 5ú brat glas, bitheagsúleacht. An rud atá i gceist le bitheagsúlacht ná na difríochtaí atá idir an dúile beo atá mórthimpeall orainn. Ní amháin go bhfuilimid ag brath ar bhitheagsúlacht ach tá tionchar ar ár ngíomhaí uirthi. Táimid ag iarraidh feabhas a chur ar an mbitheagsúlacht atá sa scoil trí imeachtaí gardíneach agus ag mealladh feithid agus éin isteach sa scoil. Míle buíochas do na tuismitheoirí a tháinig isteach chun ord agus eagar a chur ar ár ngáirdín. Tá coiste glas bunaithe againn, tuismiteoirí, daltaí agus muinteoirí ina measc ach is tionscadal scoile é seo. Ní neart go cur le chéile!

We have begun work on attaining our 5th Green School’s award for biodiversity. Biodiversity is the huge variety and variation of life that surrounds us. Biodiversity is essential in keeping the environment healthy and fit for human life. Not only do we rely on biodiversity but our activities also have an effect on it. We are hoping to improve on our biodiversity through garden projects and looking at ways to entice birds and insects into our school. Thank you so much to our parents who came in to prepare the garden for us to work in. We have elected a committee of parents, teachers and students to steer us but this is a whole school project, everyone will play a part! As the old proverb goes: Ní neart go chur le chéile!!
